Quartzite Terrains, Geologic Controls, and Basin Denudation by Debris Flows: Their Role in Long-Term Landscape Evolution in the Central Appalachians

In this study, I looked at how the type of rock and the shape of steep valleys in the Blue Ridge mountains of central Virginia relate to powerful landscape-forming debris flows. I mapped where past landslides happened, measured how much material moved, and showed that hard quartzite bedrock and sharp slope morphologies channel these flows into focused paths.

Our work explains why some hillsides are more prone to big slides and helps communities plan safer land uses.

When writing this paper, I turned detailed field notes and measurements into clear, easy‑to‑follow scientific copy supported with photos, charts and descriptions.

I worked closely with my collaborator to check every number, then write the findings in a manner that was accessible and digestible to readers of second-tier research journals.
